... aaaand it was my fault. I'd manually upgraded 'grep' to get its new colour schemes, and by default it seems to now build grep/egrep/fgrep as separated exes, but the RPM was still installing them as symlinks to 'grep', so 'egrep' wasn't 'egrep'. This broke the LANG check in 'wrapper'.
