Sad to hear the news even I had left to play with this project in 2009 when I was in deep love with this API but my work does not involve it. I ported MarkerClusterer from JS into AS. I knew some nice guys and gals in this community.
You Flex guys including myself like to dig in Flex framework source code when running into problem. But you cannot do the same with this API, because Google does not want you to access its map image directly. I had few rounds of nagging with them to let them open source it, and as you can blindly guess, I failed. Even now I still believe it is technically possible to (1) open some source up and make it community and (2) keep Google map image database safe. It is sad time for both Google and us. My only wish is, Google, please do not drop the project and our passion like this too sudden, do something to make this community self sustainable and supported before our departure.
