If you don't mind using undocumented features, you can do this:
var ov = new GOverviewMapControl()
ov.setMapType(custommap)
map.addOverlay(ov)
Actually, as far as I can see, GOverviewMapControl itself seems to be
almost undocumented. There's one line in
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/controls.html
that mentions it, but it's not listed in
http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/reference.html
