It's not available from Google within the API. You'd need to get the directions from another supplier, such as pilot.mobi. It may well be possible to call pilot.mobi from your server. If you're doing directions within a single city, you could then scan the returned text for words that begin with upper case letters, ignoring the first word on each line, and try geocoding them. So that when it says At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Devonshire Road 1.17 miles. Grab the capitalized words "Devonshire Road", add the city name and Google geocode it. I notice that, in my area, pilot.mobi has a more up to date street database than Google, but it does have the odd quirk of adding an extra step at the start and end of the route. If I want to go from Dumfries Close to Westmorland Avenue, the directions start from Kilmory Place, drive past my start point, then finds a good route to my destination, but then drives past it into Salisbury Road.
