The issue is more complex than just the horsepower of the machine as the browser used also is very significant on the impact.. IE 6 has 1/5 to 1/10 the javascript performance of Safari 3+ or FF3+ or Opera 9, IE7 is marginally faster but still pretty much a dog. IE8 was I think rushed into release because of these very measurable differences(but I havent tested it because you are toasted when you upgrade IE there is no turning back) ... Opera has a slow SVG implementation though ... so Opera ends up using the image server which can be very slow. Is Safari still using the image server or do they now use canvas?
