Okay, that last URL didn't illustrate my problem correctly, I am now very confused!
http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?output=json&oe=utf-8&q=bs8%201th&gl=uk is actually more accurate than http://maps.google.com/maps/geo?output=json&oe=utf-8&q=bs8%201th&gl=uk&key=AAAA&callback=callback the above URLs are the same but for the key and callback parameters.
