For standard markers, you also have to deal with the corresponding "shadow" layer elements & "click" layer elements. For custom GIF markers without shadows, one parent DIV for the entire group of markers makes a lot of sense. I am planning something similar for static maps - no marker shadows, no transparent PNGs, no alphaImageLoader - just fast "hide" / "show" for the entire groups of markers.
