I grabbed the kml TESTalp.kml and it  only  had a document with 
placemarks in it (no folders)
the document and folder icons all act as toggles that open up

The point is the ground overlay shows  (I need to improve that icon and 
have it zoom to the ground overlay on click.. plus my kjson doesnt have 
any ground overlay support)

 ... use this structure to open the outer document.

<folder></folder>
<folder></folder>

Folders and documents are almost functionally the same...(except if I 
recall the specs say you cant
have style objects defined in folders I ignore that in the parser its a 
stupid limit)
