I have seen API developers put their own copyright notices on the
pages they create.

If a user then prints such a page from their browser's File -> Print
menu function, Google's own logo and internal copyright notices for
its map providers -- which appear on-screen in the map images -- are
suppressed in the printout. So the overall effect makes it look like
the API developer claims copyright over everything, including the map
image itself, even though that is surely no one's intent.

So if you do put your own copyright on your page, you should also
include an express credit to Google and its map providers.
