Note that "L74", which you originally asked about, and "L7" are not the 
same place. The only rule I know for certain is that the Royal Mail 
won't allow Google to use incodes in the API geocoder, so if you include 
one, Google removes it from the query *before* looking it up.

The details of what happens when you include a partial incode are 
unclear.
  "L74 4, UK" gets you the same location as "L74, UK".
  "L74 3, UK" gets you a location in Hong Kong.
  "L74 2, UK" gets you a location in Hampshire.
