It was done because Greece lays claim to the name "Macedonia" as part
of Greece, so the UN accepted the need to distinguish between the
present sovereign Republic of Macedonia and anything else which could
be called Macedonia. It's normally written "FYR Macedonia", but
"Republic of Macedonia" (or maybe "Rep Macedonia") would seem to fit
the bill just as well.

To answer the OP,

The name is part of the tiles, so you can't change the tiles for your
website. You could use something like Mike's ELabels
http://econym.org.uk/gmap/elabel.htm
to put your own label over the name on the map, but you would almost
certainly need one per zoom level as the map name moves. And you would
definitely need to revisit their placement when the map tiles are
revised. Diddlefinger does something similar with English labels on
Japanese maps.
