Bad form following up to myself, but here's another reference:

So, given that:
- If the three points form a spherical triangle, their center of
gravity has to lie within the triangle (duh!)
- If three points lie on a great circle, their center of gravity has
to lie on the same great circle
I've already made both those claims, but just providing a reference to
back me up.
So *all* of my examples clearly demonstrate the flaw in the original
formula.
