Precisely. That's why you're being directed away from Google's
documentation, which is frankly not good -- I hesitate to say "wrong"
-- on this point, and towards the documentation written by the
mathematics professor who has figured it all out.

What happens if you encode your points using *his* encoder? Are the
levels the same? It's possible to tweak some control values if
necessary, and you may find that the level-values of the last few
points could be improved if it's not right with the default values.

I've certainly had no problems with the encoder routine on his pages.
