The way to use the API in a desktop application is by using a browser
object. They exist in VB, Delphi, C++ environments, etc.. I know
nothing about Java, but the API comes in only two flavours: Javascript
or Flash.
You'd need to use one of them inside your Java application. You should
not simply attempt to grab the tiles, as that will get you banned, as
you discovered already.

In other words, you can use the entire *API* in a Java, or other
desktop application, but not just the tiles.
