I was actually going to have both a desktop AND a web application. I
was going to develop a desktop application which provides similar
functionality to that of a web application but allows for offline data
which can be synchronised later on. Both would have the Google Maps
API.

What I was trying to say was from what you're saying, as long as the
maps api implementation is available to EVERYBODY, even when their
free trial has ran out, then I am ok to use the free API (therefore,
like you say, other aspects of the system would cost money)

That is a very good trip cost calculator! Would be really nice if they
released that as a web service, as that's exactly what I need it for :-
