Thanks for the hint guys. I checked V3 on my iPhone now, using the
"Hello World" example from Google. However, even that is still very
slow compared to Google Latitude on the same iPhone.

Any ideas what makes Latitude so much faster? It's still a web-app, so
there must be a way to make any web-app as fast as Latitude.

Just open the following URLs on the iPhone and see what I mean:

(simple yet slow)
http://www.google.com/latitude (complex yet fast)

Am I really the first to ask this by the way? :-)
