Might I suggest removing the alerts? I find click through alerts to see what is going on annoying (although I will admit I used to do that all the time). If you are posting it for help, you could replace the alerts with GLog.write if you think they are valuable. It looks to me like you don't understand how asynchronous processing works (the "A" of AJAX: Asynchronous Javascript And Xml). You can't add the markers to the markerClusterer until they have come back from the server (which is inside the callback function).
