yeah, I'm starting to think that the XML file itself is ok, but more
something to do with how the application loads/handles it.

I see the page you linked to Rossko talks about "Server-side versus
Client-side KML Rendering"

it could be that the author of the app is relying on the addoverlay
event... so I'll go back to picking through his code.
