Hi browndash, your problems relate to your use/understanding of zoom
levels.

Google.maps displays the world as a cascade of square tiles. Each zoom
level is made up of these square tiles, increasing by a power of 2
each time. So;

Zoom level 0 = 1 tile (1 by 1) (the entire world is made up from one
tile, measuirng 256 by 256 pixels).
Zoom level 1 = 4 tiles (2 by 2)
Zoom level 2 = 16 tiles (4 by 4) (the entire world is made up from 16
tiles, EACH measuring 256 x 256 pixels).

Each tile is square, so your starting image is 1280 x 768 pixels, but
will need to be squared off to work properly. In photoshop, just
select the background colour and resize your canvas (not image).

I would then resize the image to a multiple of 256 (as this is the
default tile size in pixels) and a corresponding zoom level. So for
example, if you want your maximum zoom level to be 2 – you need to
resize your image to create 16 tiles (4 by 4). Well, 4 x 256 = 1024.
So resize your image to 1024 x 1024 pixels. Set your max zoom level to
2 and min zoom level to 0. This should generate 21 tiles. (1 for
zoomlevel 0, 4 for zoomlevel 1 and 16 for zoomlevel 2).

Let us know how that works. Obviously if you want it to work beyond
zoom level 2 you will need to make a sufficiently big image, e.g. zoom
level 3 (256 tiles, 16 by 16 would require a master image 4,096 pixels
wide)
