Kesuke, thanks a million. Your explanation was very clear and after
reading it the light bulb turned on! Everything works .... for now
(next I will deal with the markers and such)

Once I used a square object it worked fine: http://rocana-nigeria.com/gmapv3/
To get the zoom I want  (2 to 6) I am going to have to use an insanely
huge image 4^4 x 256 = 65536px.
I will give that a shot next.
