Hi Marcello, thanks for this idea.
I tried it out and the overlay maintains its quality even when you
zoom in quite hard.
The trouble is google maps stops showing the ground overlay when you
exceed a certain zoom. It seems to stop showing the overlay when the
percentage of the ground overlay that is visible falls below a certain
point. I've tried generating overlays at different pixel resolutions
but this has no effect. For example, with a ground overlay image that
covers the whole of Scotland, on my browser all of the overlay is
visible at zoom 6. As I zoom in the overlay is still visible at zoom
11 and the different coloured regions on my overlay are still quite
distinct. However when I get to zoom 12 the overlay suddenly
disappears. This is a shame as a gradual reduction in overlay quality
as you zoom in would be preferable to this abupt cut-off.
It seems that you can add more than one ground overlay so I could get
over this problem by adding several overlay tiles. Unfortunately this
is not feasible as doing this really slows things down.
I recon I'll just go back to the image tilling - with an overnight run
I can generate tiles upto zoom14.
Thanks,
Duncan
