OK I will try with the same clustering algorithm for both interfaces
and see what's most suitable.  However with clustering the rendering
time is much less significant than the time to transform the large
number of points into a small number of easy-to-display clusters.

I think the most important thing to improve in the MarkerClusterer is
better positions for the cluster centers, if you compare it to
traditional algorithms like Lloyd's k-means clustering, so it might be
a week or so before I've got anything efficient to demonstrate.
