You may wish to look into Google's enterprise solutions

I use 3rd party XMPP applications to login to my account, and I also
run a 3rd party XMPP server that I can communicate to people on GTalk
through.  There are XMPP client tools available on almost any
platform, so integrating (in this case, connecting to Google's server
as a client at each station) shouldn't be a problem.

You may also wish to evaluate other options if it is strictly internal
communication that is needed like Ignite's Openfire.
