It's not strictly speaking "done through English", because I have also
found the occasional German or French word when translating for
instance from Swedish to Norwegian. What they do (this is hypothesis,
remember) is that they fill out the gaps in one language pair with
what they have of "indirect" translation guesses.
For example, if the translator encounters a sentence that makes very
little sense (=has a low score in their algorithm) when translating
from Swedish->Spanish, checks if the translations it can get through
Swedish->(something else)->Spanish make more sense. Usually that
something else is English, because it's what they have most data in,
but not always.
And please, don't speak as if this was some obvious problem that would
be easy to fix. They do it that way because they have to, because
that's what allows them to have translations from and to Latvian in
the first place. Believe it or not, the messages on this board don't
need to be "read and analyzed on a regular basis" because they know
far more about the issues than people here. And unlike you, they know
the challenges of automatic translation.
