The explanation is statistical translation. The French use the word "Francais" a lot in sentences where an English-speaker would use "English" (for instance in the insult "Learn to speak English, you idiot"). Thus, the translator thinks it's the same word. The upside is that insults like "Learn to speak English, you idiot" are actually translated very well. We know GT is trained on public documents from the UN and EU. Probably, "Francais" is translated as "English" a lot in these.
