There is also Tesseract, cross-platform raw OCR engine. The sole format it processes is a TIFF image of a single column, from which it creates text.
Tesseract can process English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Dutch, and can be trained to work in other languages. Tesseract was in the top 3 in terms of character accuracy in 1995. It's open-source and right now developed by Google. Unfortunately, it doesn't have graphical user interface. So it needs more developing to become widely recognized OCR software for everyone. Best regards.
