Hi everyone, I recently launched a new website and I integrated some Google Translate code into each page of the site so that if users click on a specific flag the page will automatically be translated by Google into a different language. I had seen some of the other gadgets that Google offers, but none of them are compact enough for what I was looking for, and when I found this code on another site it seemed to look and work quite well. Since many other websites and blogs seem to be doing this lately with various gadgets I assumed that it had become common practice.
The issue is that I stumbled across a page the other day which said that using Google Translate on my site in this way might be against the terms of service regarding 'automated queries', and it may lead to some sort of penalties against my site if I keep it in place. I was wondering if this is indeed true and if it will be necessary for me to remove this feature from my website in order to avoid any penalties. I'm really hoping that I can keep it since it is a very useful feature on my site and I don't really think that it hurts Google in any way, but I'm not exactly trying to go out of my way to get penalized, so I wanted to see what the official word is on this. In searching for information on this the results range from vague statements warning against 'automated queries' to speculations about this possibly leading to penalties, although I'm not exactly sure if what I am doing actually counts as an automated query, so I'm hoping that someone here will be able to confidently confirm or deny whether or not I really need to remove this from my site. I don't know if this is necessary, but my site is located at http://www.hellenisticastrology.com, and you can see the flags/ translation buttons towards the top right hand corner of the page. I would appreciate any help that more experienced members of this group or those associated with Google might be able to provide.
