I'm not sure about the point you want to make, but as I said, this was _one_ of the reasons. As well, the decision was made quite some time ago (long before the first entry was made in the ChangeLog of webkit, so I'm not sure if waiting for the finish of the development of webkit would have saved a lot of time until now.
