The computers were probably shipped before the Ubuntu upgrade was available, and Good OS/Everex did not foresee this problem would arise, or they would have handled it, they were taken by surprise that the upgrade had this effect themselves. Remember that gOS is NOT an official Ubuntu variety, so the were not "in the loop" with Ubuntu about the possibility that this would happen. I understood that Good OS has tried to block the upgrade, so it was impossible to perform (it -IS- impossible to perform the upgrade from a gOS 1.0 or 2.0-beta version, due to the incompatible E17 windows manager), but maybe that is not technically possible to do, as the upgrade uses Ubuntu, not gOS servers. They DID warn about the problem on the thinkgos website though.
In any case you can re-install the gOS, or a newer version of it, for free. To solve the problem of loss of personal gOS could have used an installation where your data (home directory branch) would be stored in a separate partition, so your data is oblivious to an OS Upgrade or change, but on the other hand, such a scheme would fragment the hard- disk, so the root (system) partition would be smaller than possible, which would limit the space in which applications could be installed. The best solution is to backup all your personal data to an external medium before upgrading.
