Using Linux on a older machine I would of tried Mephis lite, Dam Small
Linux, or even Knoppix 5.1 especially when myram was limited to 256mb you
would have a much faster connection for internet, I would also look at
versionsthat were created one or two years after the Thinkpad20 they would
probably have drivers for your hardware.
New Distros such as Gos are great for newer machines and with more power
than what you are trying, take a look at least on the Mepis and DSL websites
for more information on what they can provide for you.

I use Kanotix as my primary Linux but love Gos for all the neat google
gadgets and its nice desktop, I have
had older hardware a Compaq 500Mhz machine with 256mb but have long gotten
rid of it for newer machines, even used thinkpads can be great for the
current generation of Linux distro's I just think you are really reaching
to make the T20 work with any decent speed.
good luck in your quest.
