This sometimes happens when you try to use Microsoft core fonts in Linux but they are not installed and your distro tries to use the nearest free fonts that are installed. You can test this by installing the package msttcorefonts, but you should only do this if you have obtained a licence to use these fonts (Times New Roman, Georgia, Verdana, etc). See: http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/09/09/installing-microsoft-fonts/ Alternatively, you can install FreeSans and FreeSerif fonts in Windows and use them in Windows AND Linux. Remember you're dealing with Free software (freedom as in liberty) vs. Proprietary software (proprietary as in restricts your freedom) here.
