Thanks very much for your help.

Actually, I should have stated that I am running Thunderbird in MS windows on an entirely separate computer, so there is no conflict. I was just surprised that there was so much difference between the two operating systems with this programme and far prefer the larger font on the MS operating system and hoped to be able to duplicate it on Linux

I am very new to GOS and (among other things) having trouble with the
size of the font in Thunderbird. I can alter the size of the font
easily enough in the body of the email, but the list of email entrants
in the various boxes and task bar are almost too small to read. How do
I permanently enlarge them ? They are perfectly adequate on my MS
windows OS .

Just one thing before we start: are you using the SAME fonts in Windows
and gOS? This sometimes happens when you try to use Microsoft core
fonts in Linux but they are not installed and your distro tries to use
the nearest free fonts that are installed.

You can test this by installing the package msttcorefonts, but you
should only do this if you have obtained a licence to use these fonts
(Times New Roman, Georgia, Verdana, etc). See:
http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/09/09/installing-microsoft-fonts/

Alternatively, you can install FreeSans and FreeSerif fonts in Windows
and use them in Windows AND Linux. Remember you're dealing with Free
software (freedom as in liberty) vs. Proprietary software (proprietary
as in restricts your freedom) here.

See if that helps.
