Since GOS is too much for your older laptop, you can browse http://distrowatch.com for possible directions to go with a distro. Also, I have compiled a short (and surely incomplete) list of lightweight distros that may work for you.
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org - Run light enough to power a 486DX with 16MB of Ram. It can run fully in RAM with as little as 128MB (you will be amazed at how fast your computer can be!) http://www.elivecd.org - The minimum hardware for running Elive is a 100 Mhz CPU and 64 MB of RAM, but the minimum recommended hardware is 300 Mhz and 128 Mb of RAM. You don't need any special graphic card or 3D acceleration to run Elive. http://www.dreamlinux.com.br - XFCE: Pentium III 128 MB RAM HDD. Dreamlinux is a modern and modular GNU/Linux system that can be run directly from a CD/DVD/USBStick and optionally be installed to a HDD (IDE, SCSI, SATA, PATA and USB Drive). http://developer.berlios.de/projects/delilinux - Deli Linux is a desktop Linux distribution for old computers (from i486 to Pentium MMX 166 or so). Based on uClibc. Deli Linux almost uses only "lightweight" alternatives instead of Bloatware. http://featherlinux.berlios.de - Feather Linux is a Linux distribution which runs completely off a CD or a USB pendrive and takes up under 128Mb of space. It is a Knoppix remaster (based on Debian), and tries to include software which most people would use every day on their desktop. http://www.mepis.org - (hardware info http://www.mepis.org/node/1466 ) SimplyMEPIS just works! It is pre-configured for simplicity and ease of use, and you will be productive in a matter of minutes, even if this is your first try with Linux http://vectorlinux.com/products - the bottom of the page lists the hardware requirements.
