What you claim should not be possible, gOS is based on Ubuntu 8.04, which is a long time support version THAT DOES NOT UPGRADE TO 8.10. Not even Ubuntu 8.04 itself will auto upgrade to 8.10, because 8.04 is a long term stable version, and long term stable versions do not AutoUpgrade.
An Upgrade that broke gOS happened with gOS 2.9, when Ubuntu upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04, but that happened because Good OS was not aware that this could occur, and would break gOS, but according to Good OS they have since taken precautions so it would never happen again. So gOS 3 should not accept upgrades from Ubuntu, only from Good OS. So far you are the only one who complained about this problem, as a matter of fact I was at a friends house today just hours ago, and installed gOS for him, and of course all the updates were also done, including updates from Good OS (after adding the Good OS URL in "software sources"), and it did NOT ask to be upgraded. Also just now I tested my own system for updates, and was told that my system was up to date. No "automatic upgrade attempt" happened. I don't know how it could have happened to you, but I hope this was just a fluke. If not Good OS has something to explain... In any case, readers of this message, if you are presented with an UPGRADE option, do NOT accept it, only accept UPDATES. Always wait for an official message from Good OS (on www.thinkgos.com) that an upgrade exists before accepting it. And to Choban, I can only say that restoring his install to how it was before the "Upgrade" is regrettably beyond my competence, so unless anybody with enough expertise can help you I am afraid your best option is a re-install. If you are an experienced user you might try a manual partitioning, with a separate partition for HOME, that way you can do a re-install while keeping your data, as you can keep the partition, copy its data back upon a further install, then throw away the partition, and recover the space. You can do that now too, but because the gOS is in the same partition, you have to keep a larger partition for recovery.
