20 GB should be more than enough space.  Using an XP system with a 20
GB drive (actually a virtual system on VMPlayer), I manually shrank my
XP partition to 10GB, then created a swap partition equal to my RAM
size (2 GB) at the end of the disk, then used the middle 8 GB as the
ext3fs to put gOS into.  That worked fine.  I did have a similar
problem with a version of Ubuntu, it had some magic number for
contiguous physical disk size that seemed way above the system
requirements...

Have you tried shrinking your XP partition a bit?  Also, do you only
have one XP partition, or is it split into logical drives (C:, D:)?
