Great! For your last question, from a Live CD you should be able to access your hard-disk fine, I don't know why it should be otherwise with a Live USB stick... But it sounds like you do not have the "permission rights" to "mount" (incorporate into the Linux filing system) your hard-disk system. There can be many reasons why this happens, so I have no straight solution at this time, in the past I sometimes solved problems like this by opening a terminal, and starting a file browser while using the "sudo command", so for example when the file browser is called "Nautilus" like the file browser of gOS 3, I did a "sudo nautilus", it would normally ask for a password, but not if you are running from a live_whatever.., then it would run Nautulis, with Super- User-Rights. I just tried that and it seems to work on my gOS 3 install. The trick is that you than have a file browser that runs with the maximum of file access rights you can have, as a "super user", then the file browser -should- have the access right to mount any hard- disk. so as a temporary solution you might try that.
A terminal can be found in the menu gOS>Accessories>Terminal In the window you can type commands for the system, "sudo" for example means "Super-User-Do", and takes the file to "do" (run) as a parameter. Just give it a try.... You might have a look at: gOS>System Preferences>Administration>Authorizations and gOS>System Preferences>Administration>Users and Groups For settings that might affect your user rights. Its likely that an installed version of gOS doesn't have the access rights problems. At least I never seen them on installed versions of the later versions of gOS.
