Hi Nukeador, You're absolutely right. This is possible. But in order for that to work, they have to be logged into the Google account that's linked to their Android device. It's not evident within Google Play that this process is that simple. Since there's little we can do within the Google Play environment, we're trying to use SMS to create a simpler install process.
Sending an SMS is a fairly common practice for installing app. Users are also very comfortable with SMS. It's something they do multiple times daily. The barrier to entry is much lower.
