Yes, Brendan deserved better. Much, much better. I doubt there is a single person within Mozilla both as an organization and a community that thinks otherwise. Which is why we didn't make him leave. After enduring the public battering for 11 days and trying to find a way to be an effective leader under the circumstances, he made the decision to step down.
