I have the exact experience as you before I became an active
contributor. I would also read the meeting notes every week, but
rarely attended the meetings myself. That's one way that I would find
out about interesting things happening in the project, which in the
end resulted in me becoming more and more involved.
Given the time we run it, I suspect this is a very common experience;
the project call happens around dinner time for Europeans and Oh My God
What Time Is It O'Clock if you're in Tokyo or Sydney.
I'd be really interested to see what sort of viewership we got on the
call if we ran it at, say, 10:00 AM San Francisco time every second week
and 7:00 PM SF time every other.
(Or, crazy talk: Run a second project call out of Berlin.)
