If anything, I would take personal commitment of the chief programmer as better and more trustworthy indicator for longevity too. In the past many GPs have experienced personally how even the largest companies are no protection - at all I may say (look at MIMS script or the indemnity insurance disaster for example) Ultimately trustworthy is however whoever puts the source code at least in escrow, to be released automatically whenever the product is discontinued for whatever reason.
