You guessed right. We actually have 3 such manual Diesel 4WDs in our 
household.

It allows me to fix most problems myself if stuck on a remote road, and to get 
it push started when I end up with flat batteries / defect alternator

During the yearly flood I have to cross a bride with some 40-50 cm of fast 
running water with mud covering the road, and some home visits to remote 
farms require driving steep gradients on mud tracks

It also allows me to pull tree trunks from my property, accommodate my 4 kids 
plus friends, pull heavy trailers with firewood for our winter etc. 

David sees cars from his inner urban experience perspective only. His cars 
would be useless in my environment, even if they might suit a  majority of 
Australians very well. Same with some software.
