Having practised twice in the British NHS in the last 13 years, I got the impression that for many years after the creation of the NHS, the British public accepted the idea that it was good because it was 'free'. This is true in the sense that it is good that everybody is able to access the health system irrespective of their means.

However, during my sojourns there I saw a feeling developing that being 'free' was no longer enough if the service was below an acceptable standard. I said to a number of my British patients that it was odd to hear their government boast about how little it spent on the health system.
