But if we all took a stand and refused to use their services they would
very quickly get the idea. I managed to do that with one set of
specialists who came wanting to install their own piece of software to
download their results. I refused and informed them I would cease
referring to them as the 'competition' used a common download program.
Some months later they came back and were now using a more common
downloader (I cant remember which one but it saved yet another program
being installed and maintained)

Yep, but you or I won't have much say over that as it's between the
practice and their path. providers.
