I am happy to put my hand up as some one who prefers the forum structure. I think the HCN example is a bad one. They have culled posts to maintain structure and restricted access to people of their choosing. I think their forum conditions are more onerus than found on similar forums However forums like those found at Digital Broadcasting Australia are very helpful DBA forum especially if one is doing a bit of quick research on a topic. I find the Best Practice Forum very usable BP Forum but am probably biased because that is the software I use.

Forums have their place. We use them as a knowledge repository. I just don't find them as friendly as a mailing list for discussions.

Lists I find more cumbersome. In fact for this list I tend to read the archive, choosing to receive my emails to a little accessed email address because with some of the more complex discussions, receiving emails in a somewhat adhoc structure makes argument difficult to follow.

I would suggest this is largely a symptom of members insisting on posting in a poor manner, particularly top posting, a practice which should be outlawed.

Is it just me who has forgotten my password, or has access to the archive been disabled?

I've sent you a password reminder. You can get one of these using the last option on the list's web page, listed at the bottom of each post.

Peter.
