Hi JD,

Welcome to the big bad world of commerce and private enterprise. It is
actually quite hard to make a buck (and keep it) isn't it? So when you
are in business, it pays to take a commercial view of things and make
decisions based on business sense, rather than fanciful notions and
nostalgia (if you want to be able to feed and shoe the family that is).

Now looking at what you are wanting to do, it is quite clear that
another option is to use a proper commercial service. Etiquette dictates
that I don't mention the brand names of any commercial products in this
forum, however I am sure that I could supply you with further details
offline upon request.

Take Commercial communications service product "brand X"

Used by more than 60% of Australian GPs on a daily basis
Free to GPs
Fixed price for pathology providers (in the case of a small path
provider $225 plus GST per month)
Used by more than 1200 practices in Queensland alone (instant access to
a large referrer base)
Full 1800 support, 14 hours per day
Provides copy to facility
Supports HL7 or PIT delivery
Fully integrated with the major GP practice management systems
Provides your laboratory with a free web-based viewer so that you can
see where your messaging is at any one time.
Not interoperable with SMTP based systems (this is actually a big plus
because SMTP systems are inherently unsuited to large scale messaging)

So it actually becomes a relatively simple matter;

Be swayed by emotive arguments over open source software, misguided
patriotic jingoism and pay $20k for something you have to support
yourself and from all accounts is a headache all round,

or

.......pay a modest monthly fee and get back to doing your core (money
earning) activities.....

Have I missed something here?

Kind regards

Tom Bowden
