My two girls do Karate enthusiastically. The boys can't be bothered. They tend
to wrestle most evenings before bedtime with each other and fear none
(including me :-().

In any case - it was not about beating them - I never do, never will; it's
about leaving them enough freedom so that they can learn from experience if
behave stupid - even if that means a few fractures and scars.

If they want to play with fire (or razorblades, or firearms, or chainsaws, or
motorbikes, or alcohol), we explain them what it entails and what can happen
if they mishandle it, and how to do it safely - and then they get a go if
they still wan to. I was proud when other parents told me my son was the only
one at the HSC party who did not get drunk - I reckon the results of this
policy.

So far all four are still alive, few scars, few fractures, and the oldest just
finished his HSC exams and hopefully will enter medicine after doing some
travelling and work experience overseas for a year or so.
