Horst I agree with your thinking "As long asI am satisfied that they are making a well informed decision understanding possible consequences, I respect their decision".
Yet why do we as GP's get sued because we told patient to see Specialist. We gave referral letter with contact details of specialist. Patient decides not to go and sues us succesfully later because we didn't follow up on this and lawyers claim the patient was unaware of all the implications etc. of his disease / actions ??? That is why I asked my initial question. The current guidelines about SIP / PIP payment for IT doesn't state anything other that patient data to be encrypted when sent elsewhere !! Don't really care what the HIC thinks it has to say about it, or the RACGP for that matter. The data belongs to the patient. It is their life, their health, their privacy. As long asI am satisfied that they are making a well informed decision understanding possible consequences, I respect their decision. If a specialist needs a signed dead tree copy for HIC purposes, why, I simply print it out and give it to the patient as well - then thespecialist can mothballl it in a box womewhere and never needs to retyrieve it unless he gets a HIC audit, so no complex filing / retrieval necessary, just roughly chronologic stacking of all paper.
