The reasoning is that when you view a HTML email in the preview pane, you
are essentially pressing "play" on any code contained within. As it is
pretty difficult to delete an email without selecting it, the suggestion to
NOT use the preview pane would be to prevent obvious junk or dangerous
emails from being viewed and their code executed.

On a related issue, you should ensure that linked images aren't loaded by
default (images that aren't attached to the email, but rather linked via
HTML). Any seemingly benign image can be used for statistical tracking
purposes to see when the email is read. These are sometimes invisible, a
common technique used by spammers and marketers alike.
