Depends on the distribution / configuration you use.
Kubuntu, which I use, has set (et least in "Edgy" and above) CUPS to autodiscovery, and it is running the zeroconf daemon and listener as well.

All you have to do after installation is ticking once your permission for either sharing and /or discoverings shared resources

Sorry Horst but just to clarify, I was talking of using CUPS on the Mac to configure the printer !!

I like however the suggestion of possibly running a zeroconf daemon on the Mac though.
