Hi Syan,

To ensure secured login over the internet, but this is not really your question, isn't it?

Are you referring to why diy as opposed to getting a CA to do it for us?, if this is the question, then the answer is that we do not have any particular reason except to save a few bucks and is quick.

Good morning David,

We actually like it a lot to be able to backup to Google, we can extend the Google api and implement practice backup policies as if it was just part of your local resources with a zero footprint and a few other nifty features we implement for Insight.

Some practices using Insight keep their last 30 days of backups and then do a bit of cleanup/archiving once a month and they are ready for the next few weeks. Nice, simple, intuitive and very quick for a young practice. I understand that Insight is the only product that takes this approach.

On virtualisation, you'll be around this neck of the woods next month, how about a nice flat white by the beach side when you are here?.

I really like the idea of Google looking after my backups. GFS may be the optimal file system for reliability of data access.

Virtualisation is going to add a whole new dimension to the practice of performing back ups and restores (not to mention uptimes). However having data snapshots on "permanent" media still sounds like a good idea. Burning data to DVD remains my mid term solution.

P.S. I note even the Herald is getting its head around virtualisation (http://www.smh.com.au/news/biztech/are-you-being-served/2007/03/26/1174761375455.html?page=fullpage#) although they've haven't yet cottoned on to the advantages, both developmental and technical, in the open source implementations such as Xen.
